  • College Packing List for Guys: A Mom's Move-In Checklist

by Melissa Bajda June 28, 2026

This year I am the mom packing up a son for college. My son Tobey is headed to Bryant University, and somewhere between the bedding aisle and the third trip to the store for things I forgot, I realized two things. There is a lot that goes into sending a boy off to college, and almost no one writes the list the way a mom actually needs it.

So I made my own. This is the real college packing list for guys, the one I am using right now, with the stuff the glossy checklists skip and the things I wish someone had told me sooner. Whether you are sending your own son off or shopping for a guy who is, I hope it saves you a few trips to the store.

A quick note before the list. Check your school's housing page first. Most dorms tell you the bed size (almost always Twin XL), what is already in the room, and what is not allowed. Five minutes there saved me from buying the wrong sheets twice.

    Dorm room essentials

This is the foundation. Get these and the room is livable on day one.

    • Twin XL sheets, two sets, so there is always a clean one
    • Mattress topper, the single upgrade every kid thanks you for later
    • Comforter and a couple of pillows
    • A small fan, dorms run hot in August
    • Storage bins that slide under the bed, the dorm is smaller than you think
    • A desk lamp and a power strip with surge protection
    • A desk organizer to corral the chaos of a shared room

For that last one, a Personalized Wood Desk Organizer does double duty. It docks his phone, watch, keys, and wallet in one spot, which for a guy means he actually knows where his stuff is. His name on it also makes it clear whose desk it is when the room fills up with roommates.

    The shared bathroom reality

If he is in a traditional dorm, he is sharing a bathroom down the hall. That changes what he needs.

    • A shower caddy that drains, so it does not grow mildew
    • Shower shoes, non negotiable
    • A bath towel set, dark colors hide everything
    • A toiletry bag he can actually carry to and from the bathroom

A Personalized Canvas Travel Toiletry Bag or the JetSet Personalized Toiletry Bag is one of those things he would never buy himself and uses every single day. His name on it means it does not walk off in a shared bathroom either.

    Laundry and trips home

He is coming home. For breaks, for long weekends, with a bag of laundry he swears he will do himself. Give him something built to haul it.

    • A laundry hamper that doubles as a bag
    • Detergent and a roll of quarters or a laundry card, depending on the school
    • A duffle big enough for a long weekend

This is where a real duffle earns its keep. The Muscle Duffle and the Campus Voyager Personalized Duffle Bag are both built for laundry runs, weekend trips, and the ride home for Thanksgiving. Engraved with his name, a duffle is the kind of gift he carries for all four years.

    Tech worth packing

Keep this simple. Schools provide wifi, so you are filling gaps.

    • Laptop and charger, plus a backup charging cable
    • A surge protector with USB ports
    • Headphones
    • A backpack that survives a full course load
    • A speaker for the room

A Voyager Personalized Canvas Backpack handles class, the library, and the gym. And an Engraved Bluetooth Speaker is the thing that turns a bare dorm room into his room.

Health, safety, and the grown-up stuff

The boring section that matters most. This is the one I spent the most time on.

    • A basic first aid and medicine kit, with a thermometer
    • A copy of his insurance card and important documents
    • A small fire-safe pouch or folder for documents
    • A multi-tool or survival kit for the guy who is figuring out life on his own

An Ultimate Personalized Survival Kit sounds like a novelty until the first time he needs a screwdriver, a flashlight, or a way to fix something at 11pm with no parent down the hall. It is a quietly thoughtful gift for a kid stepping into independence.

    The things everyone forgets

Here is the list I built from my own missed trips to the store.

    • Extension cords and more chargers than you think
    • Command strips and hooks, no nails allowed
    • A small toolkit or multi-tool
    • Quarters and a laundry card
    • A reusable water bottle
    • An umbrella and a rain jacket
    • A door stop and a small lockbox for valuables
    • Stamps and a few cards, he will need to mail something eventually
    • Snacks for the first week before he learns the dining hall hours

Gifts that travel from home to campus

Most of his packing list is the basics he needs. But move-in day is emotional, and a gift that is made for him is the thing he keeps long after the shower shoes are gone. The pieces I keep coming back to are the ones with his name on them, because anyone can buy a duffle, but a duffle with his name is a gift from you.

If you are shopping for a guy heading to college, our gifts for college guys collection is built around exactly this. A personalized duffle, a desk organizer, a toiletry bag, a backpack. The everyday things he needs, made personal. If he is a recent grad first, our graduation gifts for him and gifts for 18 year old boys bridge the summer between high school and the dorm.

The part no list prepares you for

You can pack every box and still not be ready for the quiet drive home. Tobey is chasing his own thing at Bryant, back on the mound and stronger for everything it took to get there, and I could not be prouder. But proud and ready to let go are two different feelings, and the boxes do not help with the second one.

So here is my real advice, mom to mom. Buy the mattress topper. Make the list. And then make sure one of the things in his room is something with his name on it, so that on a hard night far from home, he has a small reminder that he is loved and that you are only a phone call away.

Good luck with your move-in day. You have got this, and so does he.
