The Standard: 60 / 25 / 15

Champion $720, runner-up $300, third $180. The split most leagues use because it makes the title worth chasing and gives third his money back plus change.

How it works

Champion takes at least half the pool.
Third place recoups the entry fee.
Nothing for fourth. Fourth is the worst place to finish in fantasy.

Commissioner's tip. If your league argues about payouts every year, this is the one to write into the bylaws and stop arguing about.

Cash$$$$$Who pays: Everyone, at entry

Champion $840, runner-up $240, third $120. For leagues that think the title should feel like a title.

How it works

Champion takes 70 percent.

Commissioner's tip. Top-heavy splits work best in leagues with a trophy, because the trophy covers the bragging rights and the cash covers the rest.

The Weekly Cut: hold back 20 percent for high scores

Cash$$$$$Who pays: Everyone, at entry

Hold back $240 of the pool: $15 a week for the 14-week regular season is $210, and the last $30 rides on the Week 17 high score. The remaining $960 splits $576 / $240 / $144. It keeps the 2-9 teams setting lineups in November.

How it works

Weekly high score is paid on total points, not on winning.
Bye weeks count. Tough luck.
Ties split the week.

Commissioner's tip. The weekly cut is the single best fix for a league where half the teams quit after Week 8.

Regular-Season Points Champion

Cash$$$$$Who pays: Everyone, at entry

A separate $100 prize for the most total points in the regular season. It rewards the best team even when the playoffs go sideways.

How it works

Paid on regular-season total points only.
Can stack with a playoff finish.
Announce it at the start of the playoffs so the loser of the bracket has something to point to.

Commissioner's tip. This is the prize for the manager who scored the most and lost in the semis to a 4-point kicker. He needs it.

Last Place Funds Next Year's Trophy

Cash$$$$$Who pays: The loser

The last-place finisher pays for next season's trophy or prize hardware on top of his entry. It turns the punishment into a prize for everyone else.

How it works

Loser buys next year's champion hardware, with a cap set in the bylaws.
He presents it at the draft, with a speech.
If he quits the league, his deposit covers it. Collect the deposit at the draft.

Commissioner's tip. Pair this with a real punishment from the other list. The trophy purchase is the fine, the Waffle House is the sentence.

Side Pots: Survivor, Pick 'Em and the Ring Fund

Cash$$$$$Who pays: Opt-in, $10 to $20 each

A $10 NFL pick 'em or survivor pool running beside the league. Winner takes half, the other half buys the championship ring or trophy. The prize funds itself.

How it works

Opt-in, separate from the main pot.
Half to the side-pot winner, half to the hardware fund.
Commissioner runs it in the same group chat.

Commissioner's tip. A $10 side pot in a 12-team league is $120. That is a ring and a trophy every year with nobody noticing they paid for it.

The Weekly Belt or Chain

A cheap belt, chain or hat that the weekly high scorer wears in his profile picture until someone takes it. Zero cash, maximum trash talk.

How it works

Holder must post a photo wearing it within 24 hours.
Passes to the new high scorer every Tuesday.
Holder at the end of the regular season keeps it.

Commissioner's tip. The photo rule is the whole thing. No photo, no belt, and the league decides what the penalty is.

First Waiver Priority

Weekly$$$$$Who pays: Nobody

The weekly high scorer jumps to the top of the waiver order for one week. A prize that costs nothing and changes rosters.

How it works

Applies for one waiver run.
Overrides the standard order for that week only.
Commissioner sets it Tuesday night.

Commissioner's tip. Free, and it matters most in Weeks 3 to 6 when the breakout players hit the wire.

Lowest Score Buys the Round

Weekly$$$$$Who pays: That week's loser

Lowest total of the week buys the first round the next time the league is in the same bar. Or he sends everyone a $3 coffee. The point is the announcement, not the money.

How it works

Lowest points, not the losing team with the most points.
Debt is public in the chat.
Unpaid debts roll over and compound.

Commissioner's tip. Keep a running tab pinned in the group chat. By December it is a document of shame.

Player of the Week Engraved Pint

Weekly$$$$$Who pays: Pool holdback, about $20 a week

One engraved pint glass per week, with the week number and the high scorer's name. By the playoffs the best managers have a set.

How it works

One glass per week, engraved with Week N and a name.

Any manager who leaves a bye-week or injured player in his starting lineup pays $5 into the pot. The pot pays the Week 17 high score.

$5 per dead starter, every week.
Paid into a side pot, not to the commissioner's pocket.
Side pot goes to whoever wins the final week.

Commissioner's tip. By December the autopick pot is often bigger than the weekly prize. That is the incentive working.

Best Trash Talk of the Week

A league vote every Tuesday for the best message in the chat. Winner picks the league's chat name for the week.

How it works

Nominations in the chat by Monday night.
Vote closes Tuesday noon.
Winner renames the group chat, within reason.

Commissioner's tip. The renaming rights are worth more than cash to the right kind of league.

Survivor Pool Inside the League

Each manager picks one NFL team to win straight up each week. Lose once and you are out. Last one standing takes the pot.

The QB Hoarder

Most quarterbacks rostered at once in a one-QB league. Usually three. Occasionally four.

Most Points in a Loss

Highest score in a losing effort. The manager who did everything right and ran into the week's high score.

Highest losing total across the season.

The Ghost Manager

The Commissioner's Pet

Given to whoever lobbied the commissioner the hardest for a rule change, a trade veto or a scoring review. Voted by everyone except the commissioner.

League MVP (Regular Season Points)

The reigning champion holds one trade veto for the season. He can kill one trade, no explanation required.

How it works

One veto, one season.
Must be used within 24 hours of the trade.
Cannot veto a trade he is part of.

Commissioner's tip. Most champs never use it. The threat is the prize.

Host the Draft at the Champion's Venue

Perk$$$$$Who pays: League pool

The champion picks where the draft happens next year, and the league pays for the food. Steakhouse, lake house, his own backyard.

How it works

Champ picks the venue.
League pool covers food and drinks up to a cap.
Last place sets up and cleans up.

Commissioner's tip. Set the cap in the bylaws before someone picks a rooftop bar.

Super Bowl Party, on the League

The champion hosts the Super Bowl party and the league pays for it. It is the last event of the season and the champion is the guest of honor at his own house.

How it works

Pool covers food and drinks to a cap.
Trophy is on the table the entire game.
The loser brings the wings.

Commissioner's tip. Put the trophy in the middle of the table with the champion's name facing the TV.

Tickets to a Game

Perk$$$$$Who pays: League pool

Two tickets to an NFL game of the champion's choice, bought from the pool. A prize he will photograph and post.

How it works

Cap the ticket budget in the bylaws.
Champion picks the game, any team, any stadium in driving distance.
He has to wear the championship belt or hat to the game.

Commissioner's tip. Tickets work best in leagues with a big pot and a small appetite for cash prizes.

The Champion's Jersey

A custom jersey with the league name, the champion's team name and the year. Worn to the next draft, then retired to a closet with the others.

How it works

Pool buys one jersey, about $80 to $120.
Worn for the full draft.
Numbers are the year of the title.

Commissioner's tip. The retired-jersey wall in a champion's garage is a real thing in leagues that have done this for a decade. If the champ is a player or a coach in real life too, the football gifts collection linked at the bottom covers that side.

Immunity From Next Year's Punishment

The champion cannot receive the punishment next season even if he finishes last. One year of immunity for one title.

How it works

One season only.
If the champ finishes last, the punishment goes to second-to-last.
Immunity does not transfer.

What do you win if you win fantasy football?

In most leagues the champion wins the largest share of the entry-fee pool, typically 50 to 70 percent, plus a trophy or engraved prize and bragging rights for a year. In a 12-team league at $100 a head, that is usually $600 to $840 in cash plus hardware worth $30 to $150. Leagues without money play for a perpetual trophy, a championship belt, draft-slot choice or naming rights.

What is a good payout structure for fantasy football?

The most common split is 60 percent to the champion, 25 to the runner-up and 15 to third. Many leagues hold back 15 to 20 percent of the pool for a weekly high-score prize, which keeps eliminated teams playing in November and December. Two rules of thumb: the champion should take at least half the pool, and third place should get his entry fee back.
